P-38 Lightning WWII Artillery Shell Trench Art - New Guinea 1944
Beautifully constructed piece of trench art depicting a P-38 Lightning made from 50 caliber and 30 caliber machine gun ammunition. The P-38 Lightning is removable and balances atop a large 50 caliber ammo casing and can be positioned in different directions. This is all built atop the bottom part of a naval artillery shell from Fletcher class destroyers. The artillery shell is inscribed "To Mother & Dad from Billy" and on the reverse "New Guinea 1944".
Incredible piece of history, beautifully made, New Guinea saw some of the fiercest fighting in all of World War II. Incredible commemoration. The P-38 Lightning is of course best known for its service in the Pacific theater, and most notably for assassinating Admiral Yamamoto, the man behind the planning of the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Very heavy piece about 6lb.
It is about 6" diameter and 7" tall.
